Rags to Riches – Week 2

When we left my brand new character I had just under 20k gold that I earned from 1g over the week. It was fascinating how I managed to get that far on incredibly limited resources, and so now we’ve just finished up week two. I had set a goal of 50k for myself, but I didn’t count on how drastic my game time would be reduced, there were some days all I could do was log in for a minute or two before being pulled back into real life. As such, I did NOT manage to reach my 50k goal – but I did double my investment and I am now sitting at 40k liquid gold. There’s a problem with that though.

The problem is that I only have two items left for sale, and that’s not nearly enough. I need to get some time to sit down and resupply my stock, but I also need to do a little research. I did successfully manage to flip some callous hide for a bit of a profit, but on this medium population server things can get undercut quickly. I’ve stayed away from a lot of resources because I don’t have the time to babysit the AH right now. I’d likely have much more gold if I actually invested more time into it, but that’s just not in the cards. Remember, the more time you devote to making gold (actually DOING stuff, not just thinking about what to do) typically the more gold you’ll make.

Until now I’ve stuck with what I thought were sure sellers, bought at well below the average and sold for still below the average to make sure that they move. I have been less concerned with making a huge profit, and more concerned with lots of little sales giving some profit. I’ve also started branching into transmog items now that I have enough gold that I can afford some AH fees. I’m still trying to be cautious, but I have a bit of wiggle room. I’d LIKE to continue to double my investment each week, bringing me to 80k profit by next Wednesday – but it really depends on how much time I can devote.

If you’re new to my rags to riches challenge here’s the details: I started a new character on a new medium population server. It’s a level 10 vulpera and they get 1g. They can only use the bruto mount, and the goal is to work up from 1g to .. well, whatever I can get to. Right now it’s 1g to 40k. No questing, no crafting, no farming, nothing else besides good old auction house flips. I’m using Tradeskillmaster as my addon of choice, and I’m also using a modified profile by BilisOnyxia (you can find his stuff over on Patreon).

Will I manage to reach 80,000 gold by next Wednesday? I guess we’ll have to see! As it stands right now that answer is obviously no, I don’t even have 3k worth of items for sale. I’ll have to do some serious shopping (or sniping.. same thing, right?). As always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself.

Wednesday Challenge Update: Rags to Riches

It has been one week since I started this fresh challenge – with 1g to my name, how much could I earn through ONLY using the auction house. I started off by buying a handful of items that were priced under vendor, and then I started branching out into markets that had low auction house fees (recipes, pets) and pricing them well under market value so that I wasn’t waiting for them to sell, but rather waiting for a little more pocket cash.

I set a goal to earn 10k in that first week – I thought it was a lofty goal because my play time these days is maybe 30 minutes total, 10 minutes on that new challenge character. Real life is busy, and I didn’t want to be completely defeated on this challenge because of that. the goal is to have fun after all.

I blew that goal away, and for the week earned 19,736g in total. Most of that gold was made from actual flips and not from selling to vendor. If I were patient I know that could have been a larger number, but honestly the goal is to get gold fast, not to have it sitting around for months. Gold that is tied up is of no use to me.

“How do you know what to buy” – this is where I have an advantage over a beginner goblin. I’m not new to making gold, I’ve been doing it for years. I rely a lot on intuition but my intuition is pretty good thanks to experience. Sure, I’m on a new server and I’m not familiar with it as much as my main ones, but they follow general guidelines. There is no magic trick to this part, it just takes time and experience. I watch the wow economy discord frequently to try to see what others are selling, and then just use the TSM statistics in game (along with statistics from the undermine journal) to decide if it’s worth my time.

So far, it’s working out lovely and I’m having a lot of fun with this challenge! Next goal? Reaching 50k before next Wednesday.

Rags to Riches – Update

I know it’s not Wednesday, but I just had to post. This is day two of my Rags to Riches challenge, and I found someone selling these megawatt filaments on the AH for 1g each – they sell to vendor for an enormous 30g each! That was a HUGE chunk of starter gold just sitting there waiting for me to come along.

Now that I’ve got a little pocket change, I’ve started branching out into AH sales. Nothing big to start, these phantasmal haunches were selling for a few silver and overnight someone flipped them to a gold each. The problem is they have a very expensive listing fee, so if they don’t move I’ll probably be stuck with them. I also put up those two snipes I got, priced to move and well below the regional cost (chuck has a regional cost of 9k on NA right now) in the hopes that someone scoops them up so that I can have some fast pocket change.

I have a lofty goal of reaching 10k gold by next Wednesday’s post. I’m not sure if that’s obtainable on this server, but that’s where I’m hoping to end up.

As always, happy gaming – no matter where you find yourself!

[New] Wednesday Challenge – Rags to Riches

The last Wednesday challenge was a huge success (gold wise) but I felt a bit cheated out of it. The goal was to make enough gold for a token with limited play time, and once I focused it became almost too easy to do. On that ‘new’ server I now have 1.5 million gold after less than 2 months of playing there, less than 7h a week. I decided it was time for a new challenge.

YouTube is filled with videos of people who take an item like.. a paperclip, and trade up until they have a house. Why not apply that to gold making! This will be a challenge that will teach me (and perhaps others) about making gold by ONLY using the auction house.

I started a new level 10 Vulpera Monk on a medium population RP server. They start with 1g – and that’s all I’m allowing myself as far as gold is concerned. No crafting, no questing, no adventuring. I have access to my bruto, and a mailbox. I will note one stipulation here, I AM allowed to use a vendor. To start this challenge it’s almost essential (but maybe I’ll do a hardcore version in the future where even that is limited).

The very first thing I did was use TSM to scan for items that were priced under vendor. Now this was going to either be a big hit or a big miss for me. I only had 1g to spend, I needed items that people were selling for less than that. A lot of miss priced items tend to be higher priced. So this is one very easy way beginners can potentially get gold – if there are items there to buy.

Turns out there was. Someone was selling almost 600 protoflesh for 6s each – they sell to vendor for 6s25c – I know, what a TINY profit, right? But that’s the nature of the challenge. I bought up enough and sold to vendor until I had over 2g – and then I bought the sunmotes that were for sale. Someone was selling these for 2g each – and they vendor for 2g25s. Much larger profits. Someone was selling truffles for a few silver, and they vendor for 18s75c – and slowly, piece by piece, my gold grew.

I’m now sitting at 44g21s and I have barely done anything except sell a few things to vendor. In the meantime, I’m also running sniper (not constantly, we’ll say 15 minutes here and there) hoping that I catch a lucky break. It would have to be INCREDIBLY lucky considering I only have 44g to spend. My goal is to build up my stock pile of gold by vendor flipping until I have around 100g and then I’m going to start branching into some markets. What markets? I don’t have the faintest idea yet.

Things I’ll have to be careful of? Listing fees. These can very easily be the death of this challenge. I’ll need to make sure I post things that are going to move, or buy them so cheap that it won’t matter. Or buy things that have very low listing fees (most recipes, all pets). Normally I’d just buy a handful of pets for a few silver, level them to 25 because it’s so fast, and post them back on the AH at a premium – but since I’m removing any method of gold making that does not involve the AH for this challenge, that’s not an option.

I don’t have a timeline set up or anything for this challenge, but I will post it each Wednesday and we’ll see how things are going. I’m expecting it will be a magnificent failure but I should learn a lot. Here’s hoping, in any case.

Edit: Oh dang! I got lucky while sniping, and snagged these two items. Thing is, I’ll need to price them to move because I absolutely want to be using that gold and not have potential profit tied up in the AH.
